Star Quilt Started!

I started some of these fantastic wonky star blocks that have been popping up everywhere. I just couldn’t resist starting something new when I made a stack of teal and pink. I thought I was so original and the pink and teal were the best idea I ever had. Then I cleaned up the magazine stack that had been lingering on the kitchen table and found this-

And then I realized that the teal and pink brainwave was not mine alone. Oh well, I still love it!

Elephants and trucks, ready for sale

Filed under: Baby Sized Quilts,Blue & Green Quilts,Pink & Purple Quilts — perrymoffitt @ 10:50 am

I finished two baby quilts! My WIP pile is shrinking so fast!

Minkee backing on the elephant and bicycle quilt. Not for a Florida baby maybe, but any other baby would love it!

you can find these for sale here; www.cybeleperry.etsy.com

Kaleidoscope quilt in red and pink

Image

I thought that the gorgeous morning light would show my newly finished kaleidoscope quilt beautifully. And so did this little girl. She is turning into quite the ham, not that I mind.

This poor quilt just needed it’s binding for weeks. I dropped in on unfinished projects night at Cloth and Bobbin last night and managed to finish it up before bedtime. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I am ignoring that it doesn’t match my bedroom at all. It might just be time to repaint so this quilt looks even better.

Admittedly I got distracted by my cutie girl and didn’t get any really good pictures. There some pictures of this quilt in progress here with more detail.

Two baby quilts started

Christmas has me feeling a little broke, so I am working on some quilts to sell on etsy. Two tops done so far.

I always find baby quilts to be so refreshing to make after working on big quilts. This diamond quilt was the exception. What a beast to sew! I am glad I tried this smaller size before making this pattern in a larger size. That 60 degree angle changes everything somehow, the grain of the fabric or something. The diamonds warp and wiggle, what a pain!

This is basically the end of my blue and green in my stash. Going to have to make a few purple quilts next.

I love the pink and grey combo. It has been a long time since I have done a quilt with only 3 fabrics. But these elephants kind of called for it.  I have a great binding picked out, so technically it will be 4 fabrics… Still a rarity for me.

I am also loving my new photo spot on the playhouse! Purple looks quite nice with this one :)

quilting in the dark

I was so excited about this quilt. So SO excited. I have been hoarding this pink and red stash for a while.

I spent a lot of concentration on lining up the point in the 8 piece square. I was pretty pleased with them…

And then I pieced the blocks and something went wrong. Very VERY wrong.

I pride myself as a quilter who can see a quilt and figure out how it is made. It works 9 out of 10 times. With crystal clear hindsight  I have done a little research and found the tutorial that might have helped me at Don’t call me Betsy . It doesn’t address the problem I created but I thought I would offer it up if any of you like this quilt and want to do it… better… *sigh*.

I still love it. It is a lot more wonky than I would like, but it reminds me that sitting on the beach and cutting triangles with scissors on my lap will not give me the best start. As nice as it is to cut fabric with my toes in the sand…

I will hopefully get this quilted soon and then I can start this pattern again as the baby clothes quilt I have in mind for a friend. So, I have another chance!

In other news;

My father-in-law is currently building a boat, which is coming along quite nicely if you ask me. He commissioned the boat design more than a year ago and had the design named after his only grand baby (my daughter), Darcy Bryn. He thinks Darcy Bryn is an excellent name for a boat, and I can’t help but agree. Follow his boat building here.

starting a red and pink quilt

I have been collecting a rather sizable stash of red and pink prints for a few years now. And it has been at least 4 years since I made a quilt for myself. I am ignoring the fact that my bedroom is painted the most perfect blue and that I cut out way too many of these triangles to make this quilt any smaller than a queen.  I am so in love with this quilt pattern that it was impossible for me to get it out of my head and that paired with my much loved red and pink stash is making me adore this quilt even in the early stages.

It is a tough one,  I am fighting with getting all the points to match in the center. It is HARD to get those points to match! As evidenced by one block in this picture that I will have to redo now that I see how bad it is!

Now that my husband’s work schedule has picked up again it has been ages since I have been able to get to a quilt meeting or quilt store. I was feeling a little lonesome without someone to chat about fabric goodness. Then out-of-the-blue a costume designer friend started asking me about quilts and we picked up 2 other sewers and we are doing a floating sewing night once a month and since there are so few of us we can work it around everyone’s schedule and oh, it has been a joy.  I wish I had thought of it myself! But there is something to be said about the camaraderie of a bottle of wine, a good iron and lots of sharp scissors.

And because we are never spinning enough plates, my hubby has started his own etsy store.

He is a camper (I am not). He is interested in survivalist training (I like to point out we have a perfectly good bed to sleep in). And he has a cute way of traveling with 15 feet of rope (you would never need rope if you just stayed home where there are hot showers). If you know a camper or survivalist, send him the way of this little store, maybe they will even strike up a little camper group or something.  He claims I don’t like camping when I disparage tent-sleeping, I can’t imagine what he is talking about.

Purple Patchwork Pillows

While racing around with 4 house guests this weekend I managed to finish these pillows for a wedding present. I took some photos with baby on one hip, husband asking which tie to wear and me trying to figure out what to wear 1 hour before the service.  I’m happy that I got a picture taken at all is what I am saying…

I pulled the pieced part out of my scrap basket. I have no idea what I originally intended to do with these patchwork stripes but I know for sure they came from this quilt.

And the perfect purple triangles? Came from this quilt.

I am sure this is going to sound hokey and ridiculous, but I love how these pillows are connected in a small way to an earlier wedding quilt and a graduation quilt. And how (in my crazy thinking) the bride is connected to the other people I sew for, even if she doesn’t know it.

Outside the Box Quilt, Purple and Orange!

I used the Outside the Box pattern from this book; The Modern Quilt Workshop. I had marked a similar quilt as a flickr favorite a long time ago and spent a while tracking down the pattern. In the end I just re-did the math myself to accommodate some very precious scraps I was trying to keep in the quilt.

The bride and groom had requested orange and purple.     um.       well.         how to say this gently? They would not have been my first choice? It turned out alright? I don’t totally love it? I like the pattern and the fabrics but the end result, eh.  And before you ask, I am 101% sure the bride and groom don’t read my blog.

I finished it in the wee hours of the morning the day before the wedding.  And gave up sewing earlier than I should have. I didn’t quilt the big purple squares and because I was using cotton batting, the batting disintegrated.  Big clumpy batting balls inside those purple squares. Yup. So, there is some fixing to be done. I gave it to the couple for the wedding, but I will take it back to repair at the end of the month.

and that there is Petunia. Who is very excited about snow. And wanted more than anything to sit right in the middle of this photo shoot. Luckily she is very obedient.

There was some creative design on the backing because I refused to go back to the fabric store again. But it is simple and different and I rather like it.

For the first time in a long time I remembered to put on my tag. I ordered them ages ago (from here)  and only remember half the time so they are bound to last a while longer.

baby steps. but, it’s progress

Here we are. Moving forward slowly. This will be a wedding quilt for a New Years Eve wedding. I think I will be able to get it done, but that other quilt that was a Christmas present? totally not happening.

and just because she is fantastic- a pic of my little girl before Halloween;

Orange and Purple

I made the mistake once before of asking an engaged couple what colors they would like their quilt. It didn’t turn out so bad last time. It fact I really liked it by the time I was done.  But this time? I am a more than a little fearful at the end result. Although, in the years since I last made an orange quilt for my brother in law there are much nicer oranges available… Or maybe I just grab them at every opportunity knowing how rare a nice orange fabric is…

oh wait! I just found another orange quilt I did. I loved that one. Sigh, why did I sell it?
