Fabric Memory Cards

I squealed just a little bit when I found this on Purl Bee recently;

A FABRIC memory game. okay. I am still a little giddy about it.

I have been keeping an eye out for a vintage memory game for our little girl. The current disney princess version just doesn’t do it for me.  And knowing that she won’t need it for a few years means I can save up the most perfect scrap squares for a little while. And since I know I will have to make 3 or 4 sets, I will also have the perfect gift for all those babies that are growing up so fast!

Pillowcase backpacks

I got a little distracted from the 2 quilts that are in progress and I did a little side project over the last week. I am sure these have a real name, but I call them pillowcase backpacks. All the fabric is from my stash.

Much of it is fat quarters. The orange and pink cording is from an amazing fabric and trim discount store here in the Philly area; JoMar. As long as your expectations are low, you can find all kinds of trimmings for a steal compared to normal retailers.

The orange cording was 60 cents a yard which is not so bad.  But, the deal of the day was fat rick rack for 25 cents a yard!

The 2 with astronauts are for brothers that are now 3 and 6. I made baby quilts for them long ago, but I wanted to make them something new.

I am not sure who will be getting the grey giraffes, but I think it might be a good big brother present for some friends that are expecting a new baby soon.

The pink one is for a fantastic little girl who is turning 8 at the end of the summer. To the dismay of her parents she is barbie and pink crazy. All that really matters is if she likes it…

And that there is a sneak peek at our sweet babe, who thinks this baby rocking chair, that I love so much, is unspeakably horrid. I plop her in it now and then and she always reacts with terrible dismay. And if you look real close, you will see our sweet dog, always watching from a distance, just to make sure we rescue the poor baby.

Homemade Fabric Birthday Banner

Another present. This one is for a baby turning one this summer.

It was easy to pick a color this time.

Ingredients;

19 felt triangles, 9″ wide x 11″ long

19 light colored fabric triangles, 8″ wide x 10.5″ long

19 letters of dark fabric, top stitched to triangles

7 yards of ribbon

And a cell phone picture of our big girl busting through the baby gate. It seems like yesterday she could barely sit up. sigh…

Happy First Birthday!

I simply cannot believe that she is one.

The invitees were all different ages, how to entertain them all?  We got 100 beach balls and let the kids at it. Great success!

Not walking yet, but we will get there soon.

She was in awe of people singing Happy Birthday.

perfect. totally and completely perfect.

toddler bean bag chair

It was tough choosing the perfect picture that modeled Darcy’s new beanbag chair. She will actually have 2 very similar beanbag chairs when I am done but so far this is the only one that is finished.

Delilah tried her best pose but I think in the end Darcy probably won the contract.

bits and pieces

Hard to find time to do any sewing. There is a cutie pie on the move.

But it doesn’t mean I don’t try. So, a 9″ circle and an 18″ circle.

and four funny shapes cut from home dec weight fat quarters… Stay tuned for a toddler sized bean bag chair.

10 months old! Passed like the blink of an eye…

**update, 5 months later here is the big girl using her beanbag chair***

Japanese Patterns, late to the party

I know I am late to this party. Everyone in blog land has been singing about Japanese patterns for eons and showing how very lovely the pattern books are and I largely ignored it. But recently I have discovered that there is a sad lacking in our American patterns for darling baby girls.  I have been looking for a toddler swing coat pattern for ages. Yes, Yes, etsy. I know I should be getting patterns from the fine young entrepreneurs on etsy, but see, the printable pdf? really? I don’t have it in my heart to futz with my printer options to make sure it is sized right. And I just kind of love the tissue paper. Anyway- I got sent to NYC on business yesterday and snuck in the Kinokuniya Japanese bookstore that was between the train station and the work-related destination, and talk about fabulous.

After 30 minutes of browsing, this is the book I bought. Honestly I loathe bubble dresses, they remind me of puffy drapes, but I bought this book anyway. You notice I have not mentioned the title- yup a little language barrier problem there.  I was so pleasantly surprised to find several lovely patterns that I have been seeking for ages all in one volume!

don’t let those few English words lead you astray, there is no other English to be had in the book. And the measurements are all in centimeters. goodness help me!

doesn’t this look just like the french one I love but couldn’t bring myself to splurge on? Oh wait, I thought I blogged about that, but I didn’t. But still, not an American pattern anywhere close to these (prove me wrong, I dare you).

These totally can be adapted to look like the french one I love (and blogged about) .

And my very helpful friend pointed out how good it was that these all seem to be sized for ages 4 and up because it might take me a while to get around to sewing again… very helpful, that friend.

appliquéd onesie

Baby will be 6 months old very shortly- which I can’t really believe.

So this here big baby has outgrown everything that is 6 month and even some 12 month stuff. This here onesie was supposed to fit all winter but it might only last a few more weeks. Appliqued by stitching on some great fabric. I made this post just for one little point, dear goodness folks, stop with the iron on applique, it is too stiff and ends up falling apart in a few washes. Just take the time and stitch it!  Anyway- enough preaching- doesn’t this picture crack you up?

French Patterns

Oh SouleMama, what have you done to me? You have lead me to the world’s cutest patterns and I just can’t afford them. My sadness grows.

I am fearful that Darcy will grow up without knowing the joy and beauty that is this coat. I had been looking for a swing coat pattern for toddlers for more than a year, but this pattern totals 38 euros with all the fancy shipping and I just can’t do it. I think I will work on my flat pattern drafting skills and try to drastically alter the simplicity pattern 5316 I have at home to make it a swing coat. A swing coat with that cute pointy hood. Don’t worry Darcy, we will make it work!

Soft Blocks for Baby

Along with working full time, regular housework, a 2 month old baby and a general lack of sleep I have gone above and beyond and managed to make a whopping 5 stuffed blocks in the last 2 weeks. I never thought this modest sewing would be such an accomplishment but boy, I feel lucky to have found the time to do them. I dove into my scrap squares this time, having exhausted most of my scrap stripes recently. I loved finding the 6 squares that would make one block. Making each into a little color family. I stole some of the jingle bell cat toys from the cats and nestled them in the middle of the poly-fil batting in some of the blocks. I had intentions of filling a film canister with a few beans to make a shaker for one, but film canisters are practically extinct and I’ll be damned if I can find one in my house.  There is a baby shower later this month and while I would normally make a baby quilt I think I can admit that there isn’t a snowballs chance in Hades that I will find time for that and I will be making some more of these.
