quick toddler dress

On girls sewing night I cut the skirt pieces from a pattern (simplicity2825 size 3) and with our low key thanksgiving weekend I found the time to piece them to this Old Navy shirt that has been sitting in the dresser unworn. The shirt is a ribbed jersey which was really each to stitch to. Then I took a zillion pictures of a rather uncooperative model this afternoon.

I got some smiles from her but what I really wanted was her to hold her baby doll with the matching outfit that I made from the scraps.  I would do a closeup of the baby outfit, but trust me when I tell you this;  without the little girl in the matching dress,  it is ugly! This is as close as I got to a picture of them together.

Old shed made into new PLAYHOUSE!

I should have taken some “before” pictures, but it was just too gross. I cropped this from a picture we took of the snowy yard last year. Many gallons of paint, a little bit of carpentry, and many hours of naptime over the past months have been spent on this project.

I left some hints in earlier posts at what we had transformed it into. I think it is nothing short of miraculous! How many kids have wrap around porches?

There is still lots left to do, but I have been dying to blog about it and I think we got to a pretty good point this week. Shutters and a door to keep the leaves and rain out is next on my list.

That dead stuff hanging in the corner is some lavender from the garden, I wish it looked as good as it smells.  That bench will eventually get some pillows…

Petunia even comes for visits. She would never step paw in here when it was a shed full of  junk. She has good taste.

The furniture and the tea set came from my mom and it works perfectly. Here the proud homeowner is being very patient with this photo shoot, but really wanting me to sit with her for tea.

She has gotten quite good at serving tea. Slurping noises included.

Baby shower presents from the stash

A very sweet mama friend asked for gently used or upcycled things for her new baby. I dove into my stash and perked up a few burp cloths and a bib and made a scrappy lovey for this new baby. I love love love the scrabble fabric! It makes monogramming very hip and easy! I found it at equilter.

I also gave baby this quilt, which had been in my cupboard for just a reason like this and was just the colors I was using on everything else.

I love it when a stash comes together ! Not one trip to the store for this present!

quilting in the dark

I was so excited about this quilt. So SO excited. I have been hoarding this pink and red stash for a while.

I spent a lot of concentration on lining up the point in the 8 piece square. I was pretty pleased with them…

And then I pieced the blocks and something went wrong. Very VERY wrong.

I pride myself as a quilter who can see a quilt and figure out how it is made. It works 9 out of 10 times. With crystal clear hindsight  I have done a little research and found the tutorial that might have helped me at Don’t call me Betsy . It doesn’t address the problem I created but I thought I would offer it up if any of you like this quilt and want to do it… better… *sigh*.

I still love it. It is a lot more wonky than I would like, but it reminds me that sitting on the beach and cutting triangles with scissors on my lap will not give me the best start. As nice as it is to cut fabric with my toes in the sand…

I will hopefully get this quilted soon and then I can start this pattern again as the baby clothes quilt I have in mind for a friend. So, I have another chance!

In other news;

My father-in-law is currently building a boat, which is coming along quite nicely if you ask me. He commissioned the boat design more than a year ago and had the design named after his only grand baby (my daughter), Darcy Bryn. He thinks Darcy Bryn is an excellent name for a boat, and I can’t help but agree. Follow his boat building here.

Couch-Couch Pillows (version 2)

First a quick picture of my purchases from The City Quilter, in Manhattan. Walking distance from the Javits Center where I had to go for work one day last week.  If you are visiting NYC, you won’t regret stopping in. I have yet to make it down to Purl in soho so I can’t compare the two but City Quilter has greatly expanded from my visit last year, I don’t know if there was more fabric but there was a ton more shoppers. I think it is great that so many people are quilting these days. Also, I feel less guilty about my habit when the people around me are spending more on fabric that I spend on my car loan.

I usually buy with the projects I have already started in mind. But I have more than enough for the pink red quilt I am currently working on so I shopped with a whole new project in mind. The strawberries and squiggle stripes and skull-n-crossbones will make a pretty awesome toddler dress. What will I do with the lanterns? I have no idea- but I couldn’t leave them behind.

Some more couch-couch pillows. Or sofa-couch pillows. I love the novelty of them! This time in the blue green family. Previous red orange ones can be seen here.

These are smaller 14″ pillows. But I love them just as much!

We are almost done with fall, they are calling for snow this weekend. SNOW in OCTOBER. I am moving to Miami. asap.

I think this girl would love Miami. With enough sunscreen.

A sneak peek of the exterior progress on the playhouse. interior sneak peek is here.  Purple oops paint at Home Depot $7. Green oops paint at Lowe’s $3. Making my exterior paint job $10! As soon as hubby fixes the front step (give or take the snow this weekend) I will have tons of pictures to share.

starting a red and pink quilt

I have been collecting a rather sizable stash of red and pink prints for a few years now. And it has been at least 4 years since I made a quilt for myself. I am ignoring the fact that my bedroom is painted the most perfect blue and that I cut out way too many of these triangles to make this quilt any smaller than a queen.  I am so in love with this quilt pattern that it was impossible for me to get it out of my head and that paired with my much loved red and pink stash is making me adore this quilt even in the early stages.

It is a tough one,  I am fighting with getting all the points to match in the center. It is HARD to get those points to match! As evidenced by one block in this picture that I will have to redo now that I see how bad it is!

Now that my husband’s work schedule has picked up again it has been ages since I have been able to get to a quilt meeting or quilt store. I was feeling a little lonesome without someone to chat about fabric goodness. Then out-of-the-blue a costume designer friend started asking me about quilts and we picked up 2 other sewers and we are doing a floating sewing night once a month and since there are so few of us we can work it around everyone’s schedule and oh, it has been a joy.  I wish I had thought of it myself! But there is something to be said about the camaraderie of a bottle of wine, a good iron and lots of sharp scissors.

And because we are never spinning enough plates, my hubby has started his own etsy store.

He is a camper (I am not). He is interested in survivalist training (I like to point out we have a perfectly good bed to sleep in). And he has a cute way of traveling with 15 feet of rope (you would never need rope if you just stayed home where there are hot showers). If you know a camper or survivalist, send him the way of this little store, maybe they will even strike up a little camper group or something.  He claims I don’t like camping when I disparage tent-sleeping, I can’t imagine what he is talking about.

things I have learned in the last 18 months.

Filed under: The sweet baby — perrymoffitt @ 12:23 pm

1) Elmo is the easiest Muppet to recognize.

2) I can not make anyone sleep against their will.

3) Cherry tomatoes can only be eaten off the vine. The same tomatoes on the high chair are unacceptable.

4) Single moms are heroic.

5) Thomas, Ikea and Brio trains are not compatible with each other. Thomas even has sets that aren’t compatible with other Thomas sets. Bastards.

6) The clerks at the grocery store move much faster when there is a child screaming in the cart.

7) Idiots have children. And scream at them in the locker room of the YMCA water babies class on Wednesdays at 10 am. I am not talking about myself here folks.

8 ) Petunia really enjoys Darcy’s mealtimes. Babies and dogs should come as a pair.

9) The best purchase I have ever made are the blackout roller blinds for the nursery.

10) her self portraits crack me up.

it’s the season

Filed under: Uncategorized — perrymoffitt @ 8:50 pm

It’s the season to start christmas projects and not talk about them. But I did cut the pieces for a new quilt, for ME this time. And instead of sewing the quilt pieces I made a little something out of the scraps. A sneak peek;

My yesterday. Just had to share.

We interrupt this normally sewing blog for this comic break-

So, Darcy’s toy snake fell out of the car at the sitter’s house, and the sitter thought it was real, and her neighbor thought it was real, and animal control thought it was real and called for backup and the cop thought it was real, until he got it in the snake bag… when he figured out it wasn’t real. They were terribly embarrassed, and I, well I guess I should be embarrassed, but I think it is pretty funny.

Peacock quilt

We are at the end of a long summer of weddings. And this wedding brought us to the North Carolina beach for a week. Which is pretty great. Only on day 2 and feeling all the stress melt away. Ahhhh…

This bride is crazy organized and had a theme over a year ago. Rustic Beach or some thing like that. All I know is she plans to have lots of peacock themed stuff. So I took that and ran…

Did I ever mention that I eloped? I don’t want to sound like a hater, but dear lordy, weddings these days are so big and involved. This here wedding celebration is starting on Wednesday with brunch and winding up late Saturday night. And there is no avoiding any of it, my hubby it the best man! Oy-Vey!

It is enough to drive a girl to strawberry daiquiris on the beach. Not that I had 2 or maybe 3 earlier today. Give me a justice of the peace and a nice quiet beach anyday.

anyway- the backside-

All green with a nice little pieced stripe. That navy is the bed sheet, I might have had a photoshoot with a daiquiri and not noticed that until now. Don’t worry folks, there is an aunt and uncle and grandma around to be in charge should anyone need to have a diaper change.

Sorry, got distracted there for a second. Here is another photo of the pieced stripe on the back.

And a little tag, Ta-dah! Now back to the beach. Much more relaxing to be done this week!
