Custom Orders!

I got commissioned to make a green and yellow baby quilt in the next few weeks, which is very exciting! Yellow fabric without flowers is harder to find than you might think, but I think I got some great stuff at Cloth and Bobbin today.

And the shop where I sell my dresses has become a bit more specific in the sizes and quantities they want. This time they requested 8 dresses in fall colors. I decided that using a lot of browns would qualify them as “fall colors” .

I am happy to have finally used some of the Frida fabric I have been hoarding. They still have some at equilter.com so I felt okay about using a little bit here.

My photographing skills have really dropped off recently. I think I will blame the shorter sunlight which makes me feel rushed. But my sewing skills have gotten a little better, I am focusing on the little things more and more. Which leads me to feeling rushed when it comes to photographing I guess…

Life in suburbia has proven to be exciting in the last 24 hours. I am feeling a little less pleased with my neighborhood these days. Last night I took the dog for a walk in the park down the street where 2 teenagers were chopping down a tree with an axe in broad daylight. I timidly called the police when I got home to suggest they send a friendly cop to the park to chat with the youths.

Then this morning, while getting gas in a nearby and undesirable neighborhood, a friendly bum decided to pump my gas for me, I am usually pretty good at spotting them but this one was hiding and he was very drunk at 11 am and really wanted me to switch islands to one farther away after I swiped my credit card. The attendant was a 16 year old girl who didn’t speak a lot of English, didn’t seem at all bothered by the bum and who couldn’t really grasp that my credit card was fine and the gas wasn’t working was because the drunk bum started pressing buttons willy-nilly. I finally got the pump working and I tried my best to pump my own gas but failed. He also tried very hard to make me drive away after he put the fuel handle down on the ground, not on the gas pump (so my credit card was still working). Luckily he was a short little guy so I held my ground and tried my damnedest to stare him down.  I threatened to call the cops if he didn’t put the fuel handle back and he told me I just didn’t understand. At which point, I totally lost it and started screaming “buddy, do I look like a fucking invalid to you? Do you see a wheelchair or crutches near me?  do I look physically unable to pump my own gas? Then why and the hell are you bothering me? I pulled up to a self serve! Dear god,  Leave me the hell alone!!!” Broad daylight, many other people pumping gas and none of them even flinched. The bum just shook his head like he had only been trying to help (and not scam me) and I grabbed the fuel handle from under his foot and hung it up myself. It was, without a doubt, my hot-head getting the best of me. I inherited this hot-head gene from my father and I have somehow managed to avoid getting killed in spite of it.

Then, after a whirlwind of errands, very close to my home, a big guy runs right across the road in front of me, limping but running. He didn’t even look to see if there were any cars, and as I was passing him I noticed he had a huge stack of money in his hand, and was running away from the Chinese restaurant and into a neighborhood. But was he a criminal? or just jogging with money shaped paper? and why wasn’t he running faster?

I never did call the cops, having called them just yesterday thought maybe once a week was enough. But I continue to wonder if I should have.

notable events in the past few days-

1) I got rear ended in the rain by a two door hatchback. Luckly, I was in Paul’s big truck, no injuries, no damage to the truck. The hatchback is another story. Quite possibly totaled. About 2 feet of the front of the car fits underneath the back end of the truck. Even the cop was impressed at the amount of damage the car had when I sustained none. Well, probably not impressed. More likely he was just trying to calm me down.

2) serious rain here in the Philadelphia area. The window wells filled up and caused the basement walls to look a bit like waterfalls for a few hours yesterday. Deep puddles in the basement and 6 inches of water pooled around the backdoor. I spent a while in the rain digging ditches to get the water to run down the driveway and carrying wet towels out of the basement. Mumbling the whole time about how we should rent and telling the neighbor I couldn’t just leave it for Paul to do when he comes home, that is another 2 weeks… sigh.

3) suffering an addiction to scrabulous on facebook. I found friends from high school and college and engaging them in friendly competition. Totally addicted. If you have a couple extra hours in each day, sign up!

4) got my passport renewed. I paid for expedited, sent it on a tuesday, got it back exactly one week later! Miracle!

5) got a haircut at a real salon. I think I must be a grownup now. No more $10 haircuts for me, this one is awesome and makes me wonder what I was thinking before?

Even with my new scrabulous addiction on facebook I managed to make some more baby dresses.

I am a little discuraged by etsy these days. Maybe it is really paypal that is discouraging. Somehow, with everyone taking their cut I end up losing 20% of the price of the item. So, off to the maternal wellness center with these. Yes it makes me less money but at least the fees are going to a good cause, not lining the pockets of CEO’s .

Oh! and I am teaching a new class! Baby dresses at the Cloth and Bobbin in Narberth on April 26th!

6 new dresses, delivered to the baby shop today. They are currently selling about 5 dresses a month which is pretty much all I can handle with 3 jobs. Did it stop me from buying piles of fabric today at the Joann’s? Nope, tons more fabric for the stash and a commission for a quilt in the back of my mind…

I am not sure why I thought I had to cram in all this sewing before we left for Costa Rica.

this is a new dress pattern I picked up a month ago. yes that is a metallic print… it seemed space age…

It, of course, calls for all one print, but I just can’t leave good enough alone.

It seems like a much faster dress than the sundresses I was making in the summer. No buttons I guess.

We delivered them to the baby shop today. To keep all the unsold quilts company….

Now to finish getting ready for Costa Rica! Our flight leaves at 7 am tomorrow! yipes~
