**update**

In the 2 years since I put up this post it has become the most viewed picture on my blog, which is funny- as my blog has to do mostly with sewing.  That being said, I have learned in the time between then and now that this gorgeous tree in my yard is not a tulip tree like I thought but actually a Northern Magnolia. Below is the diagnosis from my friend Grace;

northern magnolias:
relatively smaller than say oaks and maples, more ornamental
smooth grey bark
white, pink or dark pink flowers
thick petals with heady aroma
flowers bloom first, leaves arrive after flowers fall
deciduous

  1. Wow, that’s looking amazing. Especially while I look out the window and see snow
