stained glass, a present to myself

the weekend of easter, I assigned my husband

and my father, a weird little carpentry project.

Without getting into too much detail, I will say my house is a crazy money pit. We bought it for the nice neighborhood and the big yard but it is full of quirks. One was that there was no heat vents in the entire upstairs. The previous owner solved this problem by not having bedroom doors. And leaving these rather large holes into the stairwell. He obviously didn’t have very many guests… We installed doors about 6 hours after we bought the house, and I ran heat vents last summer (notice how I only mention the vents, not the returns). But now, 2.5 years later, I am finally dealing with the upstairs holes.

The hole size was a bizarre 19″ x 36″ and I could find nothing to fit it entirely. Perpetually thrifty I have been shopping around for affordable stained glass for a while and found this at Home Decorators Collection online, $99 each. I knew they were six inches too short and decided they would have to do, and then my genius father pointed out I never ran returns for the heat. **blink**Blink** returns? what is that dad? why would I need that?

Long explanation on how heat works and a fun filled trip to Home Depot and I was left with all the materials to finish them nicely. Tonight I finally finished one side of one hole. And I have to say, I am rather impressed with our work. I could have taken the easy way out and filled it with sheetrock but instead I provided some natural light for the stairwell. Ta-Dah!

  1. The “windows” look really good and I love the incorporation of those return thingies!!

    Great idea!
